Apartment emoji

The only emojis in the Unicode emoji vocabulary that represent the idea of “home” depict detached dwellings: 🏠, 🏡, 🏘️. However, most people worldwide live in attached dwellings, by some name: townhomes, apartments, flats, condos.

With urbanization and urban densification projected to increase over the course of the 21st century, the share of people living in attached dwellings will grow.

To fill this gap, some friends and I submitted a proposal for an an apartment emoji to Unicode in 2022. It was rejected; we will be re-applying in 2026.
